Introduction

What is this website / blog?

This is a collection of short stories, all snapshots of the lives of different fictional characters in a universe not unlike our own. These stories mostly come from one connected universe, which I fittingly call “the Rug”.

I’m trying to do a certain thing with this blog – explore different ways of storytelling, different ways of fabricating a story, different ways of thinking about classic cliches and plot devices of fictional writing. All while trying to balance everything else in life. My mission is simple: publish one story every week. These stories could be part of a larger narrative (the most I’ll do is probably a five-part story), but hopefully most of these stories will take at most 10 minutes to read, and will get you to think about the world in a different perspective.

I’m writing these stories like I would watch an anthology TV show – they are, if you will, an episode each. Accordingly, the first year will be the first season of The Rug.

The reason why I called this blog The Rug is because of a quote from Netflix’s Daredevil:

God’s plan is like a beautiful tapestry. And the tragedy of being human is that we only get to see it from the back. With all the ragged threads and the muddy colors. And we only get a hint at the true beauty that would be revealed if we could see the whole pattern on the other side as God does.

Matt Murdock, Daredevil Season 3 Episode 13

Now, in no way am I claiming to be God. But one can’t deny that there is some semblance of parallels between authors writing their story – creating new worlds – and God – at least in the Mosaic traditions – the Creator.

The stories you will read weave together – it’s up to you to find the patterns and the meaning behind each and every tragedy, blessing, coincidence, etc.

I also take suggestions or requests for stories or general genres, but I may deny them if they are too far off from the ‘Rugverse canon’. If I do deny them, I’ll try and explain why. Basically, I don’t really do Romance or things related to it (mostly because I have very little experience and do not want to conjure up a too fictional love story), and I usually don’t do bildungsroman-type stories, because I think there are better ways to learn and think about growing up than looking at how fictional people fail to grow up.

Why do this?

Simply put, partly to make me a better writer, partly to share some stories that bounce around in my head, and partly to lead into an actual book I’ve been writing.

Who am I?

If you’re looking for my name, then I’m afraid I won’t say anything about it on here. But I guess if I were to introduce myself I would say some of my hobbies include watching movies, playing piano/guitar/drums, practicing magic tricks, writing… basically most things excluding sports.

When will this blog be updated?

I am aiming for a story every Monday afternoon at 2 pm, the afterwords to that story every Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm, and a Thursday Thoughts (where I’ll be talking about random things) every (you guessed it) Thursday afternoon at 2 pm, all eastern standard time, but we’ll see how we do with that.

Who paints/draws those strangely specific paintings/drawings?

I do. It ain’t much, but it’s honest work.

I don’t get it.

Well, it will be hard to understand what is really going on in the first few stories, so please hang in there. You’ll start to see all of it unravel, slowly but surely. I promise they all pay off in a grand way. Just remember, nothing is a plot hole unless it is.
